Glasgow is located in central Scotland and situated along the River Clyde. With a population of more than 500,000 people, Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and the third largest in the United Kingdom. The Greater Glasgow area has a population of over 1 million people and is the largest urban area of Scotland and fifth largest of the United Kingdom.
Glasgow plays a central and most important role in the Scottish economy. The city has a very diverse economy consisting of sectors ranging from financial and business services to communications, biosciences, healthcare, higher education, engineering, retail and tourism. The Glasgow Subway is the third largest oldest underground system in the world and serves about 40,000 passengers daily. Glasgow is served by multiple large bus operators of Glasgow Citybus, McKindless, Stagecoach , Arriva, and First. The Buchanan Bus Station is the main bus hub in the city.
Glasgow has one of the largest educational systems in the United Kingdom. Glasgow is home to four major higher education schools; University of Glasgow and University of Strathclyde, each serving over 20,000 students, and Glasgow Caledonian University and University of the West of Scotland, each serving over 10,000 students. Other notable schools include Glasgow Royal Infirmary, the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and Glasgow School of Art.
Glasgow has several professional sports teams, with the football clubs being the most prominent and popular. Celtic F.C. compete in the Scottish in the Scottish Premier League and play at the 60,000 capacity Celtic Park. Rangers F.C. also compete in the Scottish Premier League and play at the 51,000 capacity Ibrox Stadium. The two teams have dominated Scottish Football since its establishment and have a fierce rivalry where they face off in an exciting derby every year. Besides domestic success, Celtic F.C. and Rangers F.C. have a history of European competition success. Celtic Park, Ibrox Stadium and Scotalnd’s national football stadium Hamden Park are the largest stadiums in Scotland. Partick Thistle Football Club is a smaller club of Glasgow that competes in the Scottish First Division, the second tier of Scottish Football. The Glasgow Warriors is a professional Rugby team.
Major media in Glasgow include BBC Scotland station Pacific Quay Studios and publications of newspapers such as the Evening Times, The Herald, The Sunday Herald, the Sunday Mail and the Daily Record.
Glasgow is a large cultural center of Scotland and is home to dozens prominent points of interests. There are over a dozen museums and galleries in the city including Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery. There are four major libraries in Glasgow, including Mitchell Library, the main public library of the city. There are over a dozen theatres in the city, including the notable Citizens Theatre , King’s Theatres and Pavilion Theatre. Major concert halls are Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and Glasgow City Hall. Many Scottish national performing arts organizations such as Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, The National Theatre of Scotland, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and Scottish Youth Theatre are based in Glasgow. The city hosts numerous festivals in various categories of music, arts and film.
Some major shopping areas of Glasgow are found in Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street.
